Let me train you in real self-defence
With twenty year of experience I will guide you and your loved ones every step of the way.

Hi. I’m Fr. Dan Banks (II Dan ITF), founder and principal instructor of Chobham Taekwon-do. I am also the vicar of St Lawrence Church in Chobham.
Between 2003-2013 I was a police officer, mostly in inner-city Portsmouth. For years I was on the Mutual Aid Support Teams confronting large scale public order incidents and violent prisoner extraction. I also worked counter terrorism.
I hold a degrees in Strategic Studies from the University of Wales Aberystwth and Theology from the University of Oxford . I was The Times MBA Scholar 2008 studying at Henley Business School.
Alongside this, I have trained in combat breath-work, and defence against weapons, experiences that informed both my policing career and the way I teach Taekwon-do.

Master James Kessler
VIII Degree
President of Alliance Taekwon-Do United Kingdom
“Dan Banks, who trained under me, is an exceptional teacher. He invests in every student and ensures belts are truly earned, not handed out.”

Master Francis Miller VII Degree
Head Coach ITF England
“From his time as a police officer, Dan brings rare insight into practical self-defence, giving his students skills that are relevant, tested, and reliable.”
Mr. Mike Richmond
V Degree
International Instructor
"I grade all Chobham Taekwon-do students. They train to a high standard and clearly love their club.”

Mr. Matt Hill
Systema Academy
“Combat breath-work is a huge development in modern combatives. I trained Fr. Dan in this; by integrating it into the student syllabus, he is placing Chobham Taekwon-do at the cutting edge of self-defence.”

Fear. Chaos. Uncertainty. What journey are you or your children on?
"Many dream of wearing a black belt, but few ever will. My philosophy is to provide a journey to black belt that offers leading-edge self-defence training in a safe environment. The purpose of martial arts is not to create arrogant fighters, but to develop calm, capable, healthy, and moral students — people with confidence rooted in disciplined freedom.
Disciplined freedom is the capacity to govern yourself under pressure, so that you are not governed by fear, impulse, or other people's chaos. I am traning the kind of men and women that our dangerous world needs them to become."
— Principal Instructor. Fr. Dan Banks (II Dan ITF)

How is Chobham Taekown-Do different?
1. Modern Combative Solutions
We integrate the latest civilian and military combatives into the ITF syllabus. Our training is informed by real-world security practice, not sport fighting and fantasy moves.

2. An holistic approach to violence prevention and response
Our students are taught to:
• Manage risk and avoid unnecessary confrontation
• Act decisively and proportionately under pressure
• Understand legal and ethical boundaries
• Function effectively when stress, chaos, and
adrenaline are present
3. Combat Breath-Work
We are the only school in the region to integrate the new field of combat breath-work. Traditional breath control focuses on maximising power at the end of a technique. Combat breath-work combines structured breathing, muscular relaxation, and nervous-system regulation to transition between techniques offering:
• Greater freedom of movement
• Improved energy efficiency
• Reduced risk of injury and faster recovery time

4. Situational awareness beyond the mat
Our training recognises that real-world violence has a before, a during, and an after. Students are educated in:
• Reading an opponent's intentions & capabilities
• Anti-bullying and personal boundary strategies
• Trauma and PTSD awareness
• First aid fundamentals
• Responsible interaction with emergency services

Ms. Claire Kilvington
Chobham TKD Welfare Officer
Chobham Taekwon-Do takes student welfare seriously. Our training standards are overseen by Alliance Taekwon-Do United Kingdom, while safeguarding is managed by the British Taekwon-Do Council. We also collaborate with Active Surrey and the local parish Safeguarding Officer to ensure best practice and multi-agency support.
